A Tour Through the Whole Land of Great Britain by Daniel Defoe, 1724-6

The Everyman’s Library published a complete edition in two volumes in 1962, and Penguin Classics published an abridged version in 1986.  This isn’t really an End to End book, but does purport to document a series of journeys Defoe made, including to Land’s End and John O’Groats.  It’s unlikely he actually visited the north of Scotland however: he borrowed the descriptions of other writers.  It’s well worth reading though.  Recommended.

A Ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats by Evelyn Burnaby, Sampson Low, Marston & Co, 1893

This is an account of an End to End journey on horseback in the summer of 1892.  The book is a disappointing one, with little insight, many boring irrelevant anecdotes, and overall little to enthuse the reader.  One for completists only. And Evelyn was male, by the way, as in Evelyn Waugh.
